Nervous System

Soothing and discharging the nervous system on a regular basis, not only can prevent our nervous system and mental-emotional reactions to life building up into overwhelm,

it can also prevent our muscles from getting stuck in their subconscious reactively-contracted state too. (if your shoulders are up round your ears what put them there?

(deep tissue massage is not required when muscles are in a contracted state due to a stress reaction! - they need soothing not give more GBH!)

By discharging and coming back into a more balanced regulated place on a daily basis,  we are more able to navigate our way through life, whilst soothing any emotions

that come up for us... after all we are Human beings with feelings, not mechanical Robots, and life isn't always a bed of roses.

Trauma Discharge Massage Therapy (TDM)

Trauma Discharge Massage Therapy is massage that soothes a stressed-out nervous system. It uses techniques that are more deeply relaxing than standard massages and helps the entire body systems to regain a level balance. This allows the client to reconnect back with themselves, their inner resilience, helps them to step out of anxiety, habituated patterns of behaviour and addictions and to feel more in control.

Quite often we don't think that we are carrying trauma or recognise a build-up of stress and tension that can be gathered through life, but over time, through life, we can fill up our stress bucket so much that we are constantly tipping into overwhelm due to an overstressed, frazzled nervous system. We might feel out of sorts, react to things - people, situations, events instead of responding, behave in ways we never did and yet can't explain why. Some people too come to me saying that they just want the trauma gone.... but the truth is we can't release the trauma - it is a "thing" that happened, what we can all too often get caught up in and stuck in though is our nervous systems-mind-body reactions to... what happened to us. So part of a TDT journey for some clients, is in releasing who they may have become through life's experiences and reconnecting with who they truly are underneath it all.

As one client put it: they used to be a confident person and didn't know how or why but had felt at some point in life that they had lost it and no longer felt confident. After a Trauma Discharge Massage session in which they had a moment of clarity, connecting with the event that had changed them, they subsequently realised why they had acted and done some of the things they had done in the years "since the event".

Awesome session - wow! A truly stunning display of Trauma discharge - Resilience building, and what followed was a total life change!

    RE-TRIGGERS

For some people though, what has happened to them in life plays over and over in their thought patterns - a mind stuck in a loop - the same story often with all the details about who said what, did what and when, and the impact that it had had on them.  What happens though is that every time the story is replayed in the mind or told - the body react/responds in the same way that it did when the actual incident or stressor took place - the same reactions in the nervous system - the same reactions in our physical muscles - the mental-emotional states being retriggered too.  It can't differentiate between the there and then incident and the story being told in the present moment here and now, and as such everything is retrigged.  The mental emotional state causing the physical muscles to retrigger into recoil - the painful muscles causing us to feel low and down on energy - and before we know it the whole being is affected - and so the loop continues.

Most people turn to talking therapies to release trauma... but the re-telling of the story can often cause a retrigger.... speak to the mind through the soothing actions of Trauma Discharge Massage Therapy though - where the person doesn't have to "retell" their story - and we are speaking not only to the mental, emotional being - via the neural stress receptors - but also to the physical body - gently soothing, giving the message that it is safe and supported, and so it can begin to let go of what it might be holding on to - it's recoil action.....  This then goes on to effect the energetic systems too - think hyper always on alert - hyper vigilant....very draining and tiring or closed off, detached, shut down..... very little energy or enthusiasm for life; so, by discharging the trauma from both the physical, mental and emotional beings we are also inviting and rebalancing the free flow of energy within the body... all of which in turn can also affect the spiritual being - our connection our place in the world.

I have just recently worked with a client who had had a car accident...they contacted me to say that they felt their body and nervous system was still stuck in the flight, fight or freeze reaction (turned out to be a combination of all three! - often the case)... and that they felt that their nervous system was stuck in hypervigilance struggling to release and let go enough to allow more physical healing to take place.  The TD Massage Therapy session was awesome... at times, I was drawn to say "you are safe, I am with you, you are not alone" whilst using the strokes that speak directly to the nervous system .... and slowly the body gingerly, gently began to let go - loosening the grip they still felt they had on the steering wheel, inviting the muscles to release from their braced position from the impact - the fight reaction to get out of the car - all of which was still being "subconsciously held on to".

I love sessions working like this because it is almost like the body is guiding me to work where it needs me... at times, I couldn’t move on from where I was just gently "holding the space" for the body to know that it could trust that it was safe and able to let go.  They were truly beautiful treatment sessions.

Self Soothe Massage Meditations are a tool that people can use for themselves on a daily basis. They include the 3 Primal Movements that are known to be more soothing and regulating to the nervous system and physical body than standard meditation alone.

They can be taught 1:1 online, in person and also done in groups. Done online the meditation can be recorded for the participant(s) to replay whenever they choose.

They are tailored to the individual clients needs:

  • In a here and now present moment, or
  • As part of a bigger picture transformational journey to enhance healing and aid resilience building.
  • They can be top ups in between in-person Trauma Discharge Sessions, or between the workshops that I run.

As stand-a-lone sessions, they can be a more budget friendly way of getting support whilst also not having to travel.  Done as series of sessions, with each session building on top of the last, supporting and helping a client through a transformational journey....just like an in person treatment session but with the client doing the soothing strokes.

A series of sessions is also a great way to build a variety of meditations designed as go to tools, depending on what is going on in life.

Quantum Healing

Self Soothe Massage Meditations can also be done in groups - Working with the self or with others, in groups apart or together, with heartfelt intentions for the greater good.  Online or as an in-person group.

In these sessions an Intention is set - and we work with connecting with the "collective" energy of the group - and the wider universe directed towards an "intendee" as an aid to potentially bringing about greater changes to the intendees health, well-being and resilience. Done online the recording can then be used by the group attendees to not only focus the intention on the individual intendee - but also give the message that they are not alone, that they are supported - where ever they may be and whatever the time maybe that they are listening to the meditation.

If you are interested in participating in a group please contact me to discuss, or check my events page for sessions.

  • Why quantum?

Everything has an energy - both within it and around it... objects, humans, and the greater universe. Quantum Healing aims to connect the energy both within us, within others when working in a group, with the universal energy flow. Theory being that by connecting with others the healing is intensified.

Primal Touch Exchange

As a Touch therapist of many many years I know the value of massage (even without research - because I have witnessed it many times over), and as a Trauma Discharge Massage Therapist I know the effects that this way of working has, not just on the nervous system, but the whole persona - It goes way beyond "a nice relaxing massage"!! I also know the benefits of "giving" a massage too.

As part of the Advanced Clinical Psycho-Tactile Psychotherapy Diploma I have been doing over the past 4 years, I have also been certified as a NeuroTouch Provider.

What that means is that I am now certified to teach the new "Primal Touch - Touch Exchange"… to YOU! Not to therapists to work with their clients - but to YOU! So you can do this at home to discharge YOUR OWN nervous system on a regular basis.

How does it work?

I teach you - along with your partner or spouse or family member (e.g. Mother-Daughter/Son-Father) or your best buddy who you see several times a week - a seated 15 minute Primal Touch Exchange sequence that you do on each other, which when done on a regular basis will help to regularly discharge YOUR mind-body-nervous system from every day stress and tension - what we call Ambient Trauma. It can also ease the stress and tension caught up in your physical body, soothe emotions, bring calm and peace to mental anxieties, it can also help balance negative - hyper or flat energy levels.

I can do this in groups or come with your "exchange buddy" and I teach you 1:1 (meaning you and your touch exchange partner).

In the training sessions you will be taught all the safeties around touch protocols - "making sure touch is safe and that you stay in control of what is good touch and not good/safe touch", also that the touch is the right depth and pace for the receiver - because "What works-works" and what works for you might not work for them - so it is also a great way also of deepening connection through communication.

The techniques are really super simple to do (you do not have to be trained massage therapists and know anatomy to do it) - the techniques are very different to standard massage and have been found to connect directly to the nervous system stress receptors, flooding them with touch that is super soothing and switch them off. Think of rocking a baby, or stroking cats and dogs - and how super soothing it is - to both give and receive. Well - it works on you too! You don't need any special equipment - just a pile of pillows on your kitchen table - slump yourself on to them, agree the touch protocols (or not!) with your exchange partner, add some soothing music and you are good to go.

Imagine a life of being able to soothe stress - teenagers going through exams, and the impact not just on them but you too! A stressful day in the office? A full on day with fractious children? How fantastic to be able to do a 15 minute Primal Touch exchange on a daily basis, or 2-3-4 times a week and have a very different experience through not just stressful times - but every day life.

If you would like to explore this further - why not reach out and contact me to arrange a time to discuss.
