I once did a swap with another therapist once who used Trigger Point Therapy and Manipulation techniques to release every tight tense ligament and muscle in my entire body. I was then told to stand up straight in a military posture, and to ice pack any areas of inflammation. WOW - well - er - no! Bodies are used to habit and they have to un learn an old habit and take on a new one, so to be released in such a manner meant it plain and simply didn't know what it was supposed to do instead. here began 18 months of my body going into crisis as it fought with itself to regain it's stability, and I wondered why it was doing what it was doing and hadn't just righted itself.
It was only when I came across Thomas Hanna's book - Somatics: reawakening the mind's control of movement, flexibility and health - did I realise why my body didn't just adopt the new and not panic and go into shock (it was a truly horrendous time, and I wouldn't wish it on any body!). It really helped me to understand why the body gets used to habituated posture and movements and what can be done to reverse them.
I actually feel that it is a book that should be read by every person in the world - and I totally believe that that they can bring about such a profound change that it would indeed - change the world! In fact it all made so much sense to me that I have undertaken training, plan to do more, and my Trainer feels that I have potentially always know this and worked in this way, but just didn't realise.
Like I said in the About Susan section - it was another WOW - I've come home moment, It makes total sense to me, and the missing link to helping people get out of pain and regain mobility and quality of life. I truly believe it was the final link to helping be get my life back, and I have so much more energy now for it! I could also now "thank the other therapist" for giving me the journey that they did - for without it, I wouldn't know what I do now, and be able because of it to help others to help themselves too.
